  • Kaitlyn McKenzie

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05jnui8sOiQ
Howdy! My name is Kaitlyn McKenzie. I chose a clip that shows the effects of leaders in the Christian community. The main leader I want to focus on is Johnathan Pokluda. JP is involved with the Unite Us ministry that goes to college campuses and spreads the gospel. JP is an effective leader due to his passion and confidence. The topic of religion can be a controversial one, however, JP knows what he believes in and has a vision of bringing everyone into faith so he is a resilient leader. Rather than trying to convince these college students he is right and to just follow him, he teaches them and builds a community that they can continue without him. This clip illustrates the effects of his leadership which goes to show how strong of a leader he is in the Christian community. This is just one example of a place JP has been an important leader. He is also brought in to preach at many churches as well as have his own church in the Waco area.

  • Camryn Whitmarsh

Howdy! My name is Camryn Whitmarsh and I selected Jamie Morrison as one of the biggest leaders I know. As a previous manager of the Texas A&M Volleyball Team, I have witnessed his leadership skills. Jamie Morrison is currently the head coach of the Texas A&M Volleyball Team. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a bachelor's degree in Business Economics with an emphasis in Accounting. Jamie's experience is filled with coaching for the Olympics Volleyball Team and the USA National Team. When Jamie came over to College Station, the volleyball program was going down. The second he stepped into College Station, he had a vision. Jamie could have easily gone and taken a job from a higher and well-developed program, but he decided to stick to his vision and build a program from the ground up. In addition, he is constantly positive looking forward to what is ahead. In this video, Jamie is being interviewed after a game at the beginning of the season. He is being very positive saying that the team is off to a great start to the season. Even though he addressed how the girls played, even though they lost the match, he positively addressed their flaws. Jamie Morrison Interview

  • Alexis Andrews

Howdy! My name is Alexis Andrews. I picked Michelle Obama as my favorite leader. Being the first black President’s wife is hard enough but to be more than a title is even harder. Mrs. Obama made a name for herself and made her own reputation instead of just being known as the presidents wife which is powerful and also inspiring.

She made her own name by voicing her opinions and being truly dedicated to bettering the World. I chose this clip because the way that she talks and carries herself in this clip is a great representation of what it looks like to be a power woman of color. She addresses the issue at hand with class, low emotion, but with a plan.

There are many qualities that Mrs. Obama possess that make her a great leader but the main 2 that I want to focus on is 1. her voice and 2. her dedication to doing the right thing. Mrs. Obama’s ability to connect with her audience is also another reason why I chose the clip I did because she captivates and levels with her audience which leaves them wanting to hear more. Due to this, her voice and her opinion is very valued.

Her dedication to making the World better is through many aspirations but the main one that I wanted to touch on was her continued efforts in promoting girls’ education globally even after she was leaving the White House. She made so many efforts when she was in the House but her dedication after, is further proof that she is a strong leader.

  • Brenley Koepp

Howdy! My name is Brenley Koepp. I chose Shannon Boxx as my favorite leader as she is someone I grew up watching and know her on a more personal level. Shannon grew up in my home town, Torrance, CA, and attended the University of Notre Dame on a soccer scholarship and then rose to the professional level. Shannon is someone who has broken many records for the USWNT as she was the first uncapped player to make a world cup roster and has the most caps by an African-American. She has inspired so many girls to play soccer and to dream big, just like Briana Scurry before her. She battled through injuries in her professional career and has autoimmune diseases that she also dealt with while playing. When she retired, she started her own organization to help players transition from a professional athlete to a normal life and is always willing to give back. She uses her platforms to encourage girls to be their true selves in sports and personal life. Having seen how she is as a mother and a retired athlete, I strive to be that caring, kind, and motivated to help others in such a humble way. She does not flaunt her successes but shows how she grew as a person through them. I chose this clip because she explains her story and it is a really great way to see her personality and her mindset.

Here is also an article on her which is really amazing:

  • Jake Wigginton

Howdy! My name is Jake Wigginton and I chose DeMeco Ryans as my favorite leader. He changed the culture of a struggling football team because of his skills as a leader. I chose him because he has so many players and coaches who rave about his leadership qualities and how he was made to be a leader. His former coaches had always praised his leadership abilities when he was a player, in part because he can motivate the people around him while also respecting them. Ryans always emphasizes the importance of trust and respect when working as a team, and that leads to improved performance on a team level. Ryans uplifts his players by never belittling them and by always communicating with them on how they can improve as both players and as men. He also rewards his players when they do well by showering them with praise and working with them individually. Ryans is able to effectively communicate with a team of 50+ because of his charismatic personality. He commands the respect of his team because of his experience and how he treats the people around him.

  • Gaerin Franklin

Howdy, I am Gaerin Franklin, and I choose Kode Bryant, aka The Black Mamba, as my favorite leader. Kode Bryant was a beast on and off the court because he worked hard and wanted everyone around him to work hard. He pushed everyone around him to be the best version of themselves for the team. Kode Bryant was very transparent with everyone he encountered; he was constant. Kode was passionate about winning games and was a communicator. Kode Bryant was transparent with his teammates about what they needed to work on for the team's greater good, and he was transparent with himself. What you saw is what you got with Kobe Bryant. He was very passionate about playing basketball; he loved winning games for the fans and himself. He also communicated with teammates and coaches about game plans, lessons, what was needed for the Lakers to win, and what was not required for the Lakers to win.

Kode Bryant was not everyone's favorite teammate, but ultimately, all his teammates knew he was putting his best foot forward every time he was on the court. He taught many of his teammates and competitors that hard work and passion will beat you every time; you must put in the work. Kode Bryant put the work in and demanded respect from everyone he encountered. #RIPBLACKMAMBA!!

  • Leah Fogle

Howdy, my name is Leah Fogle and I have chosen Mallory Swanson as my leader for this assignment. I have always looked up to Mallory since she joined the US Women's National team back in 2016 when she was just 17 years old. Mallory came onto the team and played in the 2016 World Cup and brought home the trophy with her teammates. Something I admire a lot about her was her drive and dedication to the team. In every interview Mallory has had, she is consistently praising her teammates and talking about the team using the terms "us", "we", etc. She has taken time becoming the leader she is and has learned many things along the way. As you can guess, starting on such a high level of play at such a young age is intimidating and difficult to have your voice be heard. But Mallory worked her way up on the team. She demanded to be seen as a leader and grew her presence. In fact, Mallory was named captain of the team for the 2016 World Cup. Mallory has many traits of a leader, she is driven, strong willed, encouraging, resilient, and hard working. In this interview she talks about how her team worked on their structure and principles. She gives credit to her teammates and is constantly making sure that it is known that the win was a team effort and the appreciation and love should be spread to everyone. She is humble and kind, which are two strong traits of a leader. Mallory also stays very composed when answering questions from the interviewers. She maintains confidence, keeps steady eye contact, and answers the questions fully without going too deep. Mallory is a great leader because her team can trust her and she trusts her team. She can communicate well and creates togetherness. Mallory is someone I strongly look up to and I believe many can learn a lot from her.

  • Amari Harper

Howdy, my name is Amari Harper and I have chosen Michelle Obama as my inspiration for this leadership assignment. Michelle Obama is not just an ex-first lady as many may see her. She is an inspiration, as well as a leader for young people in this country, more specifically, for young women in this country. Michelle Obama has always had a gracefulness in her that she carries everywhere. She is someone I aspire to be like and someone I would like people to acknowledge when they think of who I am becoming as a leader. The video I have chosen is Michelle speaking at the Women's Leadership Forum in 2008. Although she is there addressing the Obama campaign and all that they have worked on/are working on, the way she speaks about it is so elegant, yet engaging to her listeners. She is someone who cares about the future of the people and what we can do to ensure that we will all be able to live a life that we can pass down to generations of people. I admire the way that she speaks. People come to listen to her and to what she has to say, yet she talks about those who have influenced her and made her experiences better. Regardless of your political standpoint, she is a woman who carries herself in a manner that you cannot mimic. She is in tune with her audience and wants them to excel for reasons other than herself. As a young woman of color, it is relieving to know that there are people out there who look like me and who go through the same experiences, yet she holds a greater position of power and influence over the general population. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCKJWDZ5PhE

  • Aidan Eugster

Howdy! My name is Aidan Eugster and I chose Cam Newton when he was in college for this assignment. This clip pasted down below is one of my favorite halftime speeches I have ever heard. Cam Newton was not only an amazing football player, but he truly knew how to lead a team. As a young player, with a team in Auburn that should not have been as good as it was, it must have been extremely tough to keep everyone together. Cam Newton led this team to a national championship and won the Heisman in 2010. He did this after backing up Tim Tebow his freshmen year, getting arrested that year, then spent a year at Blinn JUCO, and ended up working his way back to Auburn to etch his name in the history books. In this clip, you can see how he rallies and starts to unify his team. His tone of voice and his belief in his teammates kept them together after they struggled against Clemson in the first half. You can see on each of the players' faces that they respect and rely on each other for support. Cam mentions that there is no next series, the time is now, the offense rely on the defense, defense rely on the offense and he said "We will win this game." The way he commands the room and how everyone just is silent and listening to him shows the way he was as a leader at Auburn. The way he battled all of the adversity and was able to achieve such greatness shows his determination. I aspire to have these characteristics as a leader in whatever I end up doing.

  • Margo Matula

Howdy! My name is Margo Matula and I chose Serena Williams. I chose this clip of Serena Williams because it truly exemplifies an effective leader. At the end of the video, she said, “…and still I rise” to emphasize that no matter what she faces, she will always get back up and try again. This determination and resilience allow her to be the best in her sport while overcoming significant challenges and injuries. Serena Williams does an excellent job of leading by example. For instance, she had to work for her Grand Slam Titles and Olympic gold medals. Her precise training schedule and dedication to becoming great made her who she is. Serena actions off the court also demonstrate an effective leader. She advocates for gender equality, racial justice, and other issues. This shows her commitment to using her platform to promote positive change.

  • Isabella Grogman

Howdy! My name is Isabella Grogman. I selected Jennifer Garner as an example of an effective leader. I believe Ms. Garner is an effective leader primarily because of her confidence and her passion. In class we discussed the themes of an effective leader. I believe that Ms. Garner is truly herself. She has clear values and principles that guide her work. It is evident that she believes in herself and is not afraid to speak her truth. Ms. Garner’s passion is also what makes her so effective. Her viewers can see that she loves what she does and is enthusiastic about her company and its products. Her excitement makes her followers feel connected and engaged in her company. Ms. Garner is a leader that does what she says she will. She follows through with her word and makes sure that she is making a difference.

I selected this clip to showcase Jennifer Garner’s leadership because it motivated me to learn more about her company, Once Upon a Farm. It is clear that Ms. Garner is enthusiastic about what she does and is eager to tell the community more about it. She stays classy and professional while also providing the audience with a few laughs. She is also very knowledgeable about the topic and it is evident that she is dedicated to telling the company’s story. I also enjoy how she understands her audience. She marketed her product to not only the adults in the room with her, but also moms and kids who were watching the interview at home. I am inspired how Ms. Garner was able to turn her vision into reality through her hard work and dedication. I believe her leadership is positively impacting thousands of people at home.

  • Edgar Hernandez

Howdy! My name is Edgar Hernandez. I selected Patrick Mahomes to be my leader of choice. Patrick Mahomes has exemplified leadership qualities his entire collegiate and professional career. He of course, has not won three Super Bowls for no reason. As everyone has seen, he is willing to put his body and mind on the line to go out there and win with his team. From leading in the huddle with motivational speeches to win games to starting his own charity called “15 and the Mahomies”. He is the embodiment of what a leader is on and off the field at all times. Here is a video of some of his values and motivations in his life. It shows that he is authentic in every way in his game, with the people around him, and with the way he lives in general. Striving to push himself to be the best he can be while also pushing the ones around him to do the same.

  • Ethan Aranda

Hi everyone my name is Ethan Aranda. I selected Mike Tomlin as my leader who has impacted me. Mike Tomlin has a resume of being a Super Bowl-winning coach and has never had a losing season in his tenure. All this to say he is one of the best coaches in the NFL, but he is even a better person, a better leader. He is a passionate leader that is considered by many to be a "players coach", in which he relates to the players, listens to them and in all leads them to their goals on the field and off. I have been a Steelers fan for as long as I can remember and Mike Tomlin, from a fan's perspective, has definitely impacted in many ways especially in the clip down below. Mike Tomlin is still the current coach for the Steelers, and looks to continue his non-losing season streak in to 2024, and hopedullky win another super bowl. With his leadership skills I look forward to learning about him more in the years to come.

  • Luke Jackson

Hello my name is Luke Jackson. The leader that I decided to choose is Elon Musk. Musk is an innovator and a leader of many people. He is a leader because many people depend on him for something whether it is Tesla, Neuralink, or SpaceX. One thing that I admire about Elon is that he is optimistic in everything that he does whether it is a deadline he is creating or an idea that is brewing up. Another thing about Musk is that he is always looking for new things to learn about and make the world a better place. Overall Elon is a great leader with determination and standards that are unmatched. It is very noticeable the impact that Elon and his companies have had on this world because of his mentality and his beliefs. Elon

  • Justin Lamkin

Howdy, my name is Justin Lamkin and I decided to choose Derek Jeter as the leader/motivator I look up to. Derek was seen as one of the best baseball players, but most importantly he was a great leader and an even better teammate. He said he was never a vocal leader which is similar to me and he led more by example and doing all of the little things right so others would follow his footsteps. He was really big on building relationships with people and understanding who they are as humans so he could lead them in all different ways. He stated in this video clip that he could yell at a certain guy because he knew how he was deep down versus other guys he would pull aside separately and lead from there. I just thought that this was really big because he understood his teammates by building relationships which is similar to me. Another big part of Derek was that he never did anything for the cameras which a lot of athletes fall into the trap of. He was just a deep down genuine human who did everything the right ethical way. I will always look up to Derek because I believe in everything he does and stands for.

  • Ryan

    Hello,

My name is Ryan Tyndall and the person I chose as my effective leader is Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton grew up in the depths of Appalachia. She was the fourth born of twelve children. Clearly this was a very large family, and they struggled with finances. Because of this, she was also bullied in school for not having much money and having homemade patchwork clothing. That didn’t stop her from doing what she wanted, which was singing. She performed from a very young age to different audiences, and eventually got her break. She had many trials, one of them being her home life. Nonetheless, she persevered and worked hard to pursue her dreams. She has shown her audiences and fans that things pay off when you don’t let negativity get in the way. She has also shown to have a strong faith in God, which has pushed her even further. Parton reached her goals and dreams while keeping a positive attitude, as well as a kind and up lifting spirit. This is even visible in the media today. She has been a role model for those who not only want to pursue music but for those who want to pursue any dream.

  • Jameson Muniz

Howdy! My name is Jameson Muniz and I decided to choose former Georgia Tech strength and conditioning coach Lewis Caralla. Carralla got his start with strength and conditioning after college and worked assistant roles in strength and conditioning with schools such as Mississippi State and Michigan. Eventually, he landed a job as the head strength and conditioning coach with Georgia Tech in 2019. A great strength and conditioning coach must be passionate about his work, and Carralla is renowned for inspiring players to push themselves not only in the weight room but also outside the facilities. Carralla also builds strong relationships with his players. Ensuring that he builds trust with the players, knowing he can get every ounce of effort out of them with that trust. Carralla is also a leader to me because of a speech he gave that I saw on the internet (the video below). He states that winning does not care, that you could do everything right, give every ounce of effort possible, and still not win. A leader follows a model, a value, with Carralla's value being the question "Are you willing to sprint when the distance is unknown?". A leader sprints without knowing how long, and leads that sprint passionately, encouraging others to do the same, and Caralla embodies that idea every day when he goes to work.

  • Alex Jorgenson

    Hello,

My name is Alex Jorgenson and the person I chose as my effective leader is David Goggin's. David Goggins has been thrusted into the motivation Hall of Fame for his incredible mindset and story. David Goggins has an incredible weight lose story from being over 300 pounds at one point to losing over 100 pounds and completely shifting his mindset. He preaches about being mentally tough and proves it with his actions which lead people. He leads with his actions and preaches about how being the best can motivate him. During his transformation, he wanted to be a marine and failed twice. Marine training is one of the toughest weeks of training throughout the United States military. He preaches about how he lead his group to shaking the minds of the lieutenants by not being broken mentally. He has gone on to teach his methods of growing mentally and sharing his experiences with others. His story is one to look up to not only to learn leadership but to gain motivation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc_JDpy3PRs

  • Kolby Nevins

A very common leader I look up to is Kobe Bryant. He influenced me to adopt the "Mamba Mentality". In the speech titled "Mamba Mentality: Power of the Mind," Kobe Bryant emphasizes the essence of the Mamba Mentality, which is about being relentless in the pursuit of excellence and constantly striving to improve, regardless of circumstances. He talks about the importance of mental toughness, resilience, and the dedication required to overcome obstacles. Bryant highlights how this mentality extends beyond basketball and can be applied to all areas of life, encouraging individuals to face challenges head-on and to never settle for mediocrity. Kobe also discusses the power of the mind in achieving greatness, stressing that success is not just about physical abilities but also about mental preparation and the willingness to push through discomfort and adversity. His message is one of empowerment, urging people to adopt this mindset in their personal and professional lives. Mamba Mentality

  • Grant

    Howdy,

My name is Grant Higgins, and when thinking of who I would choose as my effective leader for this post, I first had to build a criteria that made someone the best possible leader to me. The first point of this criterion was communication and not just the ability to speak and have a vast vocabulary, but rather the ability to communicate effectively with others. This means the ability to persuade, excite, and enrich others through various means of communication. The next point I used was the leaders’ ability to implement change, as every great leader can make a change whether it is global or within a small community. The last point I used was the level of dedication in which the leader has to their cause. A leader cannot truly lead others unless they have the utmost passion for what they are doing, which is why it is the most important point of the criteria. With all these points being said, the leader that stood out the most to me was willing to go $1M in debt in order to achieve his dream, someone who changed the game and future of baseball for years to come, and someone who is so passionate and charismatic that he was able to gain attention all over the world through his message on baseball. Jesse Cole, the owner of the Savannah Bananas, is exactly that leader, a good communicator, a teacher, who had a vision, passionate, built togetherness, and was committed above all.

  • Anna H.

    Howdy!
Anna Hancock is deeply inspired by PGA golfer Scottie Scheffler, whose remarkable achievements include winning two Masters titles, one in 2022 and the other in 2024. His illustrious career is defined by numerous tournament victories, culminating in his current position as the top-ranked golfer globally, following his outstanding gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics. What truly stands out for Anna is Scheffler's unwavering values and exemplary character. He consistently attributes his success to the support of his family and the strength he derives from his faith, openly expressing his gratitude to them in interviews. His humility and competitive spirit, combined with his remarkable ability to maintain composure in the face of adversity, have established him as a formidable figure in the sports industry. Scheffler's impact goes beyond golf, as he sets a strong example for aspiring athletes in various sports, embodying the qualities of a true sportsman and leader. Another aspect of Scheffler that motivates me is his unwavering work ethic. This approach creates a positive environment for everyone around him in the game and is one of the reasons for his remarkable success.

  • Braxton Kerley

    Howdy!
My name is Braxton Kerley and I have selected Ray Lewis. Lewis is incredibly inspirational due to his relentless work ethic, resilience, and leadership both on and off the field. As one of the most dominant linebackers in NFL history, his passion for the game and his team was evident in every play. Lewis overcame significant challenges, including a troubled youth and legal issues, to become a two-time Super Bowl champion and a Super Bowl MVP with the Baltimore Ravens. His speeches, both in the locker room and in public, are renowned for their motivational power, often getting me through some of my toughest challenges to date. Lewis's ability to turn personal adversity into fuel for greatness resonates with many, making him a symbol of determination and the belief that with the right mindset, anything is possible.

  • Drew Elliott

    Howdy,
My name is Drew Elliott and I selected Michael Jordan as my leader. I chose this video because it shows Jordan's Mentality. Jordan lead others by example. He showed those around him what it took to win championships and all of the hard work that it took to accomplish all that he did. Jordan set extremely high standards for himself and that motivated his teammates to strive for more too. He has a competitiveness to him that was above anyone else. Jordan was always striving for excellence in practice and in games and that is what led to his teams being so great. he took practices like games and most teams don't do that which put him way ahead of the competition. In the video, Jordan talks about the cost of winning and that he would constantly be on his teammates. He did this to help his teammates out, not because he did not like his teammates. https://youtu.be/WIVKGjA3Dmw

  • Grace Andros

The leader that I chose to write about is 28 time Olympic medalist swimmer, Michael Phelps. Growing up in the competitive swimming world, Michael Phelps was my biggest inspiration and role model. Phelps broke his first world record at the age of 15, this is a huge accomplishment. Aside from breaking record after record and becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time, Phelps has had his fair share of troubles and hardships. In this video he acknowledges that he had struggles and that he was not the best person at all times because of it. What I think makes him a great leader however, is that he talks about how he didn't let his hardships stop him, instead push him to be a better person and athlete. Some people think of leaders as being someone who always is a bright light for those who look up to them, which is true. But I also think that what makes a great leader is someone who faces their hardships head on and uses them as fuel instead of a roadblock. Another thing that Phelps mentions in the video is how when he was 15 he set the goal of changing the world of swimming. As we know now, he not only changed the world of swimming but also changed the world of athletics as a whole. Phelps knew that after a big event like the Olympics, most athletes take a bit of time off to recover. He used this to his advantage every time and while his fellow athletes were home, he was in the pool pushing himself to be better. This helped set him apart at such a young age. This among other reasons is what makes Phelps a great leader as he was consistently looking for ways to be better and met his troubles head on.

  • Noah Shepard

    Howdy!
My name is Noah Shepard and I have selected C.J. Stroud as a leader I admire. I chose this clip because it highlights C.J.'s commitment to his faith and how big of a role it plays in his life. As a Christian, I recognize the importance of the sacrifice he made for me, and respect the way he uses his platform to talk about his faith. He also realizes the importance of not getting caught up in the game. He knows that there is more to life then just football, there is also faith and family. Another great leadership trait C.J. possesses is accountability. Being a leader comes with a lot of responsibility to set an example for others, and he realizes this and is trying to become a better version of himself so he can preach what he teaches. He also stays true to himself, even after winning big games he always makes sure to thank God and give thanks. Even when the media tries to silence him he stay true to who he is which is another great quality of a leader. All in all C.J. is a huge inspiration for me through his faith and leadership.

    Howdy,
My name is Tate Robbins and the person I decided to do this assignment over is Dak Prescott who is the Quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. I chose this video clip because it gives you an in depth look of the trials and tribulations Dak has been through including him losing his mom to cancer at a young age, then a few years ago him losing his brother to suicide. With all that Dak Prescott has been through, it gives me motivation that no matter what is thrown your way you must keep moving foward and Dak is a great example of that. A few qualities/characteristics Dak has that make him a leader is having grit, toughness and just never backing down. Being what he has been through has gotten him to where he is today and has turned him into a well known leader in todays world. Winning the Walter Payton award is another example of him being a leader on and off the field and simply is another reason that solidifies him as a leader. Having to be a Quarterback for America's Team cannot be anyone other than a leader and that is another reason I view Dak Prescott as a fantastic leader who I look up to.

  • Maya Wolf

Hi My name is Maya Wolf and the person I decided to do this assignment over is Jim Calhoun. The reason I chose him is because in my opinion he was the most effective leader I have ever been able to witness. He is a motivator, system creator, he always defines his team wins, and he is extremely loyal. Those are just some of the characteristics he portrays. When thinking about how to motivate a team you have to think about not just the team as a whole but the individual players and how each of them needs to be motivated. He does exactly that. Calhoun is known to be a pretty intense coach and will yell and scream at his players easily. That said, during the entire season, he never yelled or scream at Doron Sheffer who was a star player for UCONN. For Sheffer, this would have been a de-motivator. Calhoun was such a good leader because he had an amazing system he created in order for the program to always run smoothly. Even if a player would leave, transfer, or they would lose staff, he always had a back up plan and never let this ruin his program. Being a leader also means to be so loyal and he definitely was that. He was the head coach of UCONN for 26 years and never left them astray. He would even work hard to stay in contact with staff and players after they moved on to different things. These are exactly the reasons I look up to Jim Calhoun as a person and as a coach.

  • Susanna Whidden

Howdy! My name is Susanna Whidden, and for my leader I chose one of the Atlanta Braves's best- John Smoltz. Smoltz was 1/3 of the Braves's dynamic pitching trio that led them to their 1995 World Series. In this clip, Smoltz is discussing some of the themes of his book, particularly the theme of failing to succeed. One thing he mentions is that we see a player with a career average of .300 as an amazing player, but he still failed 70% of the time. Great leaders do not see failure for what it is on the surface, but as an opportunity to grow and become better. Smoltz faced a lot of failure in his career, including his switch from being a starter to being a closer and the kind of failure that was onset from there. However, he finished his career with over 200 wins and 150 saves, making him the first player to do so. All in all, John Smoltz shows that leaders must be willing to turn fear on its head to move past it to something greater. Redefining fear is something I'm still learning to do in my own life, which is why I look up to Smoltz so much as a leader. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVrJQwrITOc

  • Thomas

The sporting world is driven and revolutionized by leaders within the industry. Nick Saban is a great example of a leader who has instilled excellence and built a memorable reputation within their organization, in this case the University of Alabama. I believe that Coach Saban is the gold standard leader of collegiate athletics; a leader that several teams take notes on and watch closely due to his amazing insight in the realm of coaching, financial management, and player/staff relations within college football. Saban is now retired from his 17 year tenure with the Crimson Tide, but during his time in Tuscaloosa, Saban won ten SEC West Titles, nine SEC Titles, and six national championships. In the eyes of every person who is decently understanding of sport, Nick Saban should be acknowledged and remembered for the leader he was. The University of Alabama has historically been a staple in the world of collegiate athletics and a great part of it comes from the classical, hard-working, accountability culture that he has been established by Saban. I looks at Saban’s leadership style particularly more than others, he is a leader that is very eloquent and highly intelligent who knows very well how to use different approaches to be respected by everyone. Potential Division 1 recruits often highlight Saban as being a very welcoming and family man. Nick Saban is not someone who only cares about his players, he cares about his players and their whole family making his relationship with every single one of his players more tight-knit while inducing trust that they are joining a good program to boost their football careers. This video is a great example of Saban's standards: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DpcSJj8hWg

  • Christopher Cole

The pro athletes life will always be in the spotlight. Many people direct their attention to the words and actions of many NFL players. My sport leader is CJ Stroud because of the example he sets on the big stage. CJ is a man of obedience to the Lord, and faithful proclamation of Christ. For the life of a Christian, his or her "witness" is very important. A personal witness is a persons demonstration of Christ by his actions and words. I believe CJ Stroud is a great sport leader because of his humility on and off the field. Even with a phenomenal rookie season and earning lots of money his purpose in sharing his faith stays the same.

  • Kacy Smith

Howdy! My name is Kacy Smith, and I chose Riley Gaines as my leader. If we compare her to the ten attributes a leader should have, she checks all the boxes. Gaines has a vision for a better future for women's sports. She is always showing the world who she truly is and she never tries to hide from the spotlight, no matter the backlash that she receives from the media. She remains committed to the fight against transgender athletes in women's sports, and she is consistently standing up infront of large crowds and cameras to communicate her knowledge to the public. She is always willing and open to have conversations with those who may not agree with her, and she tries to help them understand why this is a problem. Her passion for the issue is clear as day, and she has build a community of female athletes who support her and her cause. Her listeners know they can trust her because she makes sure to bring the facts out whenever possible. Lastly, Riley Gaines is very decisive in her everyday life now that she is a public figure. I am inspired by her confidence and strength to not back down and hide away from all the negativity that gets thrown her way. She is a young woman in a very docile and politically dangerous world, yet she continues to speak her mind anyway. Riley Gaines is the picture of an effective leader.

  • Skylar R

I chose this clip of Phil Jackson because he is widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential coaches in NBA history, with a coaching style that is both unique and highly effective. Jackson's leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in mindfulness, team unity, and a deep understanding of human psychology, which sets him apart from many other leaders in the sports world. In the video, Jackson shares key insights into his approach to coaching, emphasizing the importance of selflessness, the power of collective effort over individual accolades, and the value of maintaining a calm, centered mind. These qualities make him an effective leader because they foster a strong sense of camaraderie and trust within the team. Jackson's ability to manage egos, keep his players focused on the bigger picture, and maintain composure under pressure has been instrumental in leading teams like the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers to multiple championships. What truly makes Jackson stand out as a leader is his ability to inspire his players to achieve greatness not just through physical training but through mental discipline and emotional intelligence. His holistic approach to coaching integrating Zen principles and a deep respect for each player's individuality has led to lasting success and has left a lasting impact on the NBA and its players. Phil Jackson

  • Gessica Oliveri

I chose this clip of Simone Biles because she discusses some challenges she had going into the Tokyo Olympics. She talked about how she had to overcome the "twisties" which is when gymnasts mind and body feel disconnected. Her teammates would check up on her throughout the season and Simone felt like she was "fighting demons." I believe Simone Biles is a great leader because although she had to pull out of competing at the Tokyo Olympics, she considered her teammates feelings and what they might think. Simone continued to encourage her teammates and cheer them on because she knew how mentally tough it could be on a team to lose a member. Even after the Tokyo Olympics, Simone Bi Simone Biles les felt that some days she would take 1 step forward and 5 steps back, but she was determined to not give up. I think she is a great example of a leader who has faced challenges and hardships, but she did not let those challenges hold her back from something good.

  • Will Szymanski

    Howdy,
My name is Will Szymanski, and I chose Michael Jordan as my leader to highlight. I decided to choose Michael Jordan because of his incredible success in the NBA. In the video clip below, Michael Jordan describes how both winning and leadership have a price, and also gives an insight to what his mindset was during the peak of his NBA career. He also explains how he held everyone on the Chicago Bulls roster to the highest standard and was constantly pushing them to their limits in order for them to reach their goals as a team. As for winning and leadership having a price, MJ mentions how a lot of people close to him did not always view him as a "nice guy" at times, simply because he was so passionate and determined to make everyone around him better. Finally, he mentions how he never asked anyone to do anything he would not do himself. This shows that although his standards for the team were so high, he would never ask his teammates to do things he knew they could not do. As a result of his leadership, Michael Jordan is widely regarded as the best basketball player of all time and both he and his teammates took part in one of the best dynasty in professional sports history.

  • Jonathan Owen

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtZx72ma6Uk

    Jonathan Owen:

I chose this clip of Tim Tebow because he is a huge inspiration in my life, both from a football athlete and as a Christian. He embodies what it means to show humility and vulnerability on a scale that is unheard of for somebody with his stature. In this video, he explains the difference between successful and significant, and he explains that when you’re successful it often comes with pride, arrogance, and generally an empty feeling because success only matters if you are successful at something that matters. But significance is what we should always strive for because significance means that what you did mattered. I believe Tim Tebow to be a leader because of his significance, especially in the sharing of his faith with the world openly. He had plenty of success on the field too, but that success in my opinion only is important because it gave him an outlet to be significant as a leader and an inspiration. Tim Tebow embodied leadership during his time at Florida as well through his humility and ownership of the team. His ‘promise’ press conference following the teams first loss of a season exemplifies his willingness to own mistakes, humbly apologize, and promise to be better and to make others better going forward. And he has always made others better since then in life as well as on the field. Tim Tebow is a leader and role models in my eyes because of his conviction to the things he says and the ways that he lives out what he says.

  • Matthew Rangel

    Howdy!
My name is Matthew Rangel and I chose Derek Jeter as my leader. Derek Jeter, a former professional baseball player, is widely recognized as an effective leader for several reasons. Being able to set an example for others is one of his strongest traits. Jeter established an example for his teammates to follow on the field by constantly putting forth a lot of effort, being dedicated, and having a strong commitment to excellence. Even under pressure, his cool demeanor helped to maintain his team's composure and focus. Jeter was renowned for his excellent sportsmanship and sense of morality. He gained the respect and affection of both opponents and teammates by playing the game fairly. Another quality that made Jeter a strong leader was communication. He was well-known for being likeable and eager to listen, which gave everyone in his presence a sense of worth and inclusion. His ability to relate to his teammates contributed to the team's strong sense of unity and trust. Jeter's drive for victory and competitive spirit also motivated everyone around him to aim high. He was a motivator who could bring his team together in difficult times and celebrate successes in a humble manner. All things considered, Derek Jeter's work ethic, honesty, communication abilities, and capacity for inspiring others were characteristics of his leadership, which made him a respected person in the sports world in addition to being an effective leader. • Tanner McCarter

Howdy my name in Tanner McCarter and I chose J.J. Watt as my motivational leader. J.J. is a former Houston Texans football player who was an idol of mine growing up, and is one of the greatest Texans players ever. The reason that J.J. is one of my biggest motivators is not because of his actions on the field but off of it. He started the JJ Watt foundation to help under privileged kids be able to get in to sport regardless of their wealth class. He set out in college to start this foundation; he felt that every kid should have the opportunity to be part of sport even if the parent was not able to afford it. J.J. is the definition of what it take to be a good leader and not selfish with the money that he made. The most amazing that he did even after he was traded to the Arizona cardinals was raised 41.6 million dollars through his foundation to aid in recovery from hurricane Harvey. The way that JJ carries himself makes him an amazing leader, he does not go out and look for praise when he does things he does them out of the kindness in his heart. For me personally he is the most inspirational person that I look up and believe he is for many more young men around the nation.

  • Payton Wrinkle

    Howdy,

My name is Payton Wrinkle and I have chosen Tom Brady as the leader to highlight for this project. I chose Tom Brady because he is one of the most successful athletes ever, regardless of sport. I originally thought of Tom because I was thinking of very successful athletes who weren’t in a position where leading others is listed in the job description. I chose Tom because he made it a part of his identity, a part of his personal job description.

In this video, Tom mentions a lot of terms and “rules” that Dr. LaSota has taught us already. He speaks on how the teams that he played on were successful because they had a vision, were committed, communicated, trusted each other, and were open to learning from one another. Even as Brady got older, and became one of the oldest players on the team, he was open to learning based on younger player’s and staff’s opinions. Brady was a teacher as well, he mentored and coached younger players on how they should approach football on and off the field. All of these components put together is how he was able to win 7 Super Bowls between his long stint with the Patriots and brief time with the Buccaneers.

  • Nolan Henk

Howdy! My name is Nolan Henk and for this assignment I chose Former Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban as my leader to write about. Nick Saban will go down as the greatest college football coach of all time and arguably one of the best ever to coach the game of football. Coach Saban has won 7 National Championships, has a career record of 292–71–1, and 5 SEC coach of the year awards. Despite all of these accomplishments and accolades Coach Saban while talks about the winning and glory he's produced, preaches the accomplishments and lives he's changed off the field. Saban always talks about how important it is to lead men by example and help others, saying “ Instead of asking someone how they are, ask them who they've helped”. Coach Saban lead players and men everyday by coaching them hard, and despite sometimes chewing them out, he would always still love them after and would do anything he can to help his players succeed in life. Saban often talks about how during his time at Alabama he produced nearly 700 college degrees, showing the importance he takes in leading his players to have a positive and successful life after college or after football. Players' abilities and performance on the field weren't always what Coach Saban cared about the most; it was the performance in the classroom and the grades they made. Coaching at the highest level and winning at the highest level takes much leadership, however to produce that same success off the field and in the community, while changing the lives of his players takes the ultimate leadership. Which is exactly why Nick Saban is one of the greatest examples of a pure successful leader.

  • kellen goodall

There are pro athletes across the spectrum of sport that I find to be inspirational, but one that is truly a leader for the sport he played is Paul Rabil. Paul is considered the greatest lacrosse player of all time and has recently started and led the major professional league known as the PLL. He demonstrates his leadership abilities by leading through action and word. He does so in a variety of ways, such as through his popular youth camps, his TED talk, and his donations to lacrosse communities. He also shows his leadership persona when he mentions his trips to Africa and different areas of the world where he delivers goals, nets, and sticks to children who would otherwise never have the opportunity to learn the game .The way he speaks and carries himself also plays into major reasons why I believe him to be a great leader.

  • Owen Ondreyka

Howdy, my name is Owen Ondreyka, and I decided to choose Tiger Woods. Although he may not be the best role model in his personal life, he has paved the way for many people when it comes to the game of golf. More recently, he was a leader for the PGA tour when it came to the LIV league coming in and paying PGA players to play for them instead. In the clip provided, it is evident that despite nearing the end of his career, Tiger’s impact on the game and its players is far from gone. Not only has he been a leader for the game by being one of the best to ever do it, but also through his extremely driven and disciplined personality. Not only has he always been learning throughout his career, but he is also always teaching fellow players on the tour. Many players look up to him as one of the greats so they will take any piece of advice he can give them. It is mainly through his passion for the game and his ability to teach other golfers that I see him as a leader, and that is why I chose him as my leader.

  • Kaila Sparrow

Howdy, my name is Kaila Sparrow and I chose Tom Brady as my leader to talk about. Tom Brady is a next-level leader. He is one of the great competitors and great quarterbacks that ever played the game of football. Tom Brady shows incredible leadership qualities. You know Brady, a learner at times has to show ability, show that he is honest. He can admit that his teammates, coach, and the franchise that he has benefited from them all. Some players might say he is more talented than them, and that is okay with Tom because he is insecure about himself, and that whats what him a great leader. And that is what we see in Tom Brady. We consistently see him handle situations like a great leader, and his behavior frequently. Tom Brady is a champion for a reason, he is also a role model in so many different ways because of the leadership that he shows. Tom Brady has been a very positive outspoken guy. The way he handles young and veteran players. He is just another coach on the field. What Tom Brady has brought to the Buccaneers is perfectionism. That you can’t necessarily touch, that you just feel, and you just copy it. All those things are what the players did the day he became a buccaneer player, as for as the respect that they showed him, and followed him, and they allowed him to teach them the championship way. Because Tom Brady is the ultimate champion in pro football. Even his head coach said the same thing, he said at one point “ I just step back and let Tom coach”. How many coaches in the NFL can say that? That is the utmost respect you can pay to a player. And Tom Brady has earned that, and everything that he has got in his career.

  • Jazzelle Lopez

Howdy! My name is Jazzelle Lopez and I chosen Jessica Mendoza as my motivational leader to highlight. Jessica Mendoza was a four-time First Team All-American softball player for the Stanford Cardinals between 1999-2002 and a former member of the US women’s national team between 2004-2010. She won gold at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, and a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. On August 24, 2015 she became the first female analyst in the history of Major League Baseball. She is currently a broadcaster for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball and analyzed her first MLB post-season series on ESPN radio on Saturday. She is recognized for her empathetic approach, understanding the needs and challenges of those she leads. Jessica Mendoza often mentors younger athletes and professionals, offering guidance and support that fosters growth and confidence in others. Jessica Mendoza told ESPN she felt Latinas needed to "Embrace the fact that you are different." Which is why she is my inspirational person. Jessica Mendoza

  • Mary Laudadio

Hi! My name is Mary Claire Laudadio and I chose Riley Gaines as an effective and motivating leader.
Riley Gaines was a swimmer at Kentucky University. She was defeated by Lia Thomas (a biological male) in the NCAA Championship. Riley worked her whole life to get to the NCAA Championship and win this event. After graduating she made the decision to put off going to school to concentrate on defending women in sports. Gaines is currently trying to sue the NCAA for violation of Title IX because the NCAA is dismantling Title IX by allowing men to compete in women's sports. Many people agree with her on this standpoint, and I think it is inspiring how she took it upon herself to do something about it and sue the NCAA for the greater good of women's sports. She is motivating because she advocates for policies that protect the integrity of women's sports. She has persisted in promoting her views in the face of opposition and criticism, which shows her courage in standing up for what is right. Her participation has sparked a conversation on complex problems, including gender identity, equity, and athletes' rights. Her advocacy proves that it is possible to stand up for one's convictions and publicly speak out about it, even in the face of opposition. Riley Gaines demonstrates resilience and personal development. She had to adjust, pick up new skills, and deal with criticism when she went from being a student-athlete to an activist. Her ability to express her opinions clearly and intelligently and withstand criticism from the public conveys her strength and personal growth—which is inspiring and admirable. Gaines uses her position as an athlete to raise awareness of this violation of the NCAA, and she has assumed a leadership role. She has built a platform by participating in countless podcasts, interviews, and public speaking events, which has demonstrated her initiative and commitment to fighting for fair and safe competition. Riley Gaines is an effective leader due to her clear communication, passion, and authenticity in advocating for fairness in women's sports. Her courage to stand up for her beliefs, resilience in facing criticism, and ability to engage in dialogue make her a compelling and influential figure.

  • Andrew Post

Howdy, my name is Andrew Post and the leader that I chose to talk about is JJ Watt. JJ Watt is the embodiment of what it means to be not just a leader on the field, but a leader in your everyday life as well. JJ Watt is known for his incredible work ethic and is the personification of the phrase “first one in, last one out.” His dedication to his craft didn’t only separate him as a generational player among the rest, but it strongly inspired his teammates to push themselves even harder. He fantastically portrays what it means to lead by example, showcasing his more than impressive skills on the field. Not only that, but he fought through numerous injuries throughout his career, and seemingly came back better every time, displaying to his teammates that no setback can’t be overcome. For me, and many others, the best thing about Watt is his infectious energy that just makes you want to follow him into the unknown. He is one of a few people on the planet that could arguably get someone so amped that they would run through a brick wall if he told them to. Another great example that Watt has shown is his charitable involvements. During Hurricane Harvey, Watt demonstrated his commitment so much to the city of Houston that effectively he became a leader for the entire city. There are few players that are loved more, and even fewer who have left larger impacts on not just the game of football, but how a football player should conduct themselves.

  • Trent Nieto

Howdy, I am Trent Nieto and I chose Jameis Winston as an effective and motivating leader. Jameis Winston is an effective leader due to his charismatic personality, strong work ethic, and ability to inspire his teammates. He demonstrates resilience in the face of adversity, often taking responsibility for his actions and learning from mistakes, which builds trust and respect among his peers. Winston's vocal leadership on and off the field, combined with his competitive spirit, motivates those around him to perform at their best. Additionally, his football IQ and understanding of the game enable him to make strategic decisions that benefit the team. I chose this clip because he is mic'd up which shows the audience exactly how he leads. In the clip Jameis Winston talks to his teammates and gives them motivation. Jameis also give a speech before the game about taking advantage of your opportunity. In his pregame speech he talks about how it does not matter where any of them are from because they have right here and right now and to be obsessed with the opportunity they have. https://youtu.be/cr2qReRQO40?si=psUJ30dQpWxHV0Kb

  • Maren Erwin

    Howdy!
My name is Maren Erwin and I picked Nick Saban, Alabama's former head coach, as the motivational leader to write about. Saban is known for being one of the greatest leaders in college football. As a coach he followed the “Trust the Process” philosophy. In the video, he emphasizes the importance of focusing on daily tasks rather than stressing over long-term goals. This philosophy highlights the importance of discipline and consistency which helped his team stay focused even when put in high-pressure situations.
Saban was able to adapt to most situations almost immediately. He was always evolving his coaching style, whether that meant adding new offensive plays or adjusting his recruiting methods. Saban made sure his team was at the top of their game in the changing world of college football.
Saban genuinely cared about developing his players both on and off the field. He emphasized values such as accountability, discipline, and perseverance. All of which helped shape his athletes into leaders. By setting high expectations and holding everyone to those standards, he proved time and time again why he’s such an effective leader.

  • Tyler Honea

    Howdy everybody,
My name is Tyler Honea and I picked a soccer player named Carles Puyol. Throughout his career, he has been known for being one of the best captains and leaders ever. Carles has played for Barcelona Futbol Club for all of his life and never played for any other team. He is someone who will put his body on the line in every game he has ever played. One game in his career, he got shoved and talked down to by an opponent pretty badly and his reaction was shocking. His teammates started to run towards the opponent so they could stand up for Carles, but when they were getting close, he rushed to his feet and yelled at them to go away and he can handle it. The two players ended up shaking hands later on and they moved on like nothing happened. In fact, I asked a good friend of mine, Francisco, earlier this week who he thinks is the best captain to ever play soccer. Francisco is a fan of Barcelona's biggest rival, Real Madrid, even said without hesitation that Carles Puyol is a fearless leader and the greatest captain to play soccer. With his leadership on and off the field, he gained the respect of everyone in the soccer industry and proved himself to be a fearless leader. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIswzt6EuY4

  • Shea

Howdy, my name is Shea Daniels, and the leader I chose is Ray Lewis. Ray Lewis is someone whom I have always looked up to. One of the main reasons is that we both played the same position in football, so I aspired to be as good as he was. My admiration, however, extended past his skill on the field and included how he led the Ravens team. Ray Lewis was always known to be a vocal leader. There are countless clips of his speeches on the sideline or in the locker room. One thing that always stood out to me in his speeches was his passion. He was always able to motivate people and bring out the best in them. This also fits perfectly with the position he played since, as a middle linebacker, you are the leader of the defense. This is something that I wanted to bring onto my team when I played football. I also think that these are qualities and attributes that I can take into my life after sports. Any great leader is able to motivate the people they are working with and that's what Ray Lewis was able to accomplish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgZ8S76gcG0&pp=ygUccmF5IGxld2lzIGxlYWRlcnNoaXAgc3BlZWNoIA%3D%3D

  • Kade Leist

Howdy, my name is Kade Leist and the leader I chose to talk about is PJ Fleck. He is currently head coach at the University of Minnesota Football team but at the time of the video, he was still at Western Michigan University. I first watched these videos (they are a part one and two so hopefully that is fine) when I wanted to know what Minnesota meant by row the boat. I noticed their odd saying and Googled PJ Fleck Row the boat. Everything he says is exactly what my dad and brother had been trying to get in my head all along. Coaching much like leadership should not be about wins and losses, it should focus on the positive impact you were able to make in someone's life that they might not have gotten elsewhere. I have found that I want to remain the person I am now no matter the job title or prestige I have in the professional industry. I believe leadership is important every second of the day and in every single encounter we make with others around us no matter who it is. Coach Fleck talks about growing the men inside and outside of the game and I think there is no better display of leadership than that.

  • Emily Gilstrap

Howdy, my name is Emily Gilstrap and the leader I chose is Simone Biles. Biles is a professional gymnast who has competed in three Olympics and has won a total of eleven Olympic medals. Some people, including myself, would argue that she is one of the greatest athletes of all time, but it is not just her athletic ability that contributes to that. She has overcome many obstacles in her personal life including some very public ones over the last decade or so. From battling mental health on the global stage to confronting her abuser in court she has become a role model for many young girls because of her resilience. She holds qualities that attribute to her being an amazing leader for her team and everyone who looks up to her. One of the biggest qualities that she holds as a leader is her ability to be open and vulnerable about everything she has been through, even when it becomes difficult to talk about. When leaders are honest about their own struggles it allows for others to trust them and feel more comfortable around them because it shows that they are human too. Her ability to never give up after all she has been through also shows her leadership qualities of commitment and passion for what she believes in.

  • Cordell Williams

Hi, my name is Cordell Williams, and the leader I chose to provide is Pastor Richard Rubi. Pastor Rubi is someone whom I have looked up to and admired from a young age; I have grown up and still do attend a church in the fellowship that we both are apart of. Pastor Rubi, is one of the fellowship leaders, and I have had the privilege a couple of times to be able to speak with him, and I don't think it would be a stretch to say that he has a found a profound impact in my life. I linked a sermon he preached, and the video is fairly lengthy, but I felt it was very appropriate for this assignment. He was preaching at a Bible conference in one of our fellowship churches late last year, in a sermon that was titled, "Looking for Leaders." He had just flew in the same day and even with his voice being gone, still went up there a preached a powerful sermon. That in of itself showcases what a leader will do in difficult situations and that is press on, and push forward. He preaches about, being a servant leader, having passion, and ultimately following in the paths of living a life of who I would call the greatest leader of all time, that being Jesus Christ. I have known this man for almost my entire life, and am grateful for his exampleship and leadership and I aspire in many ways to one day hopefully become as strong of a leader, or as close to him as I can. The most important thing that I have learned is that my standards should not be that of anyone else's, but rather what Jesus's standards were; and no I will never be perfect like Him, but the Bible says to have a spirit of excellence in all that you do including in the way that you live. Pastor Richard Rubi "Looking for Leaders"

  • Jake Webster

Howdy, I am Jake Webster and I chose CJ Stroud as an effective and influential leader. While CJ has just recently erupted in the NFL world, CJ has been on championship-caliber teams. While this has taught him how to be an effective leader on the field, I want to highlight his character off the field too. In a time where there is constant change and controversy going on in our world, CJ has had the guts to speak freely about his religion and view points of the world. Along with demonstrating this leadership off the field, CJ also asked the front office of the Houston Texans to draft a player named Tank Dell. This pick became instrumental in the 2023 Season where the Texans returned back to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Furthermore, CJ Stroud, a rookie came into the league and achieve success right away, setting the rookie record for most passing yards in a season all while becoming a leader the Texans need. While declaring his success to God he has also helped other players achieve success such as Nico Collins. Overall CJ Stroud has put himself in a position to be very successful on the field and have the entire Houston Organization back him up. Whether its the character and leadership he displays on the field or off, CJ is what a true leader looks like. C.J. • Aiden Houston

My name is Aiden Houston, and one leader I grew up idolizing and even named my dog after, “Willis” is former professional football player Patrick Willis. From his rookie season with the 49ers when he won defensive player of the year and led the NFL in tackles his talents were on full display. On the field you would see his strength and physicality through his play and vocal inspiration towards his teammates and coaches during his pre-game speeches. Although Patrick Willis became a team captain for the San Francisco 49ers being a leader amongst men, he was forced to learn how to be one at a very young age. Growing up in Tennessee Patrick was the oldest of 4 with a younger sister and two younger brothers. He and his siblings grew up in abject poverty with a mother who was not in the picture and an abusive father. At the age of six Patrick would wake up and cook breakfast for his siblings, they did not get running water until he was eight, and he started working full time in cotton fields by age ten to provide and pay bills for the family. Patrick was forced to grow up faster than any child should. His father’s alcohol, drug abuse and physical abuse on Patrick and his siblings would eventually result in child services intervening where Patrick’s high school basketball coach would adopt him and his siblings. Patrick’s junior year at Ole Miss, his younger brother Detris, who he practically raised, died in a swimming accident at the age of 17. He would dedicate his senior year of college to his late brother where Patrick would go on to lead the NCAA in tackles and won the Butkus award for the best linebacker in college football. Willis would get drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round where he would go on to have a decorated career earning the pro bowl 7 of his 8 seasons in the league. Just a few weeks ago in 2024 Willis would earn his gold jacket in the professional football hall of fame being honored for who he was as a man, a player, and a leader on and off the field. Patrick Willis inspired those around him through his actions, selflessness, and character, and fans like myself were inspired by how he overcame adversity that drove his success on the field.

  • Sam Stovall

Howdy, my name is Sam Stovall and the leader I chose to talk about is Dirk Nowitzki. In my opinion, Dirk is one of the best leaders in Dallas sports history. After losing in 2006 to the Heat in the finals as well as in 2007 to the 8th seeded Warriors, Dirk became a more vocal leader. He was known for taking pay cuts to ensure the Mavericks had enough cap to sign other players to build around him. He did one thing that makes good leaders great. He backed up his words with his actions. In 2011, he led the Mavericks to the 3rd seed in the playoffs. In this playoff run, he beat a promising Trail Blazers squad led by Brandon Roy and Lamarcus Aldridge, he swept the Kobe led Lakers, he beat the young OKC Thunder led by Durant, Westbrook and Harden. Finally, in the 2011 NBA Finals, he beat the Miami Heat led by LeBron, Wade, and Bosh in 6 games as a conclusion to what many believe is the greatest playoff run of all time.

  • Gabriel Garcia

Howdy, my name is Gabriel Garcia and the leader I chose to talk about is Lionel Messi. Messi is the definition of a leader that every team needs at their most vital moments. He is a leader off and on the field as he motivates and encourages his teammates to give their life on the field. I chose to talk about Messi because soccer is one of the most nerve racking and intense sports so being able to show leadership qualities in these dire moments shows just how much of a leader he is. When Messi steps into the dressing room he is shown the respect of a leader. The team walks out as Messi walks out. This team cooperation and leadership combination is the cause for the Argentina national team's success in the 2021 and 2024 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup. At the biggest stage in the world Lionel Messi was able to motivate and lead his team to victory against one of the best france teams including Mbappe. Messi is loved across all soccer fans (unless you're a ronaldo fan) because of his humility and his upbringing as an athlete. He has changed soccer as a sport all over the world and that makes him one of the world's most iconic leaders of all time.

  • Noe Canchola

Howdy my name is Noe Canchola and the leader that I chose to talk about is Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko. Coach Elko embodies everything that it means to be a leader on the field on and off the field. Coach Elko is known for this tremendous leadership from when he was coaching DIII football to becoming defensive coordinator for Texas A&M and then becoming head coach in 2024. Coach Elko has tremendous work ethic and holds himself and his team accountable for their actions on and off the field. He has tremendous trust in each player and expects every player to play hard for each other. He has mentioned time and time before that this football program “is not his, but the all the players on the team.” This shows that Coach Elko cares deeply about his players and will do anything to make them be seen and heard. Coach Elko also embodies leadership with his demeanor and how he and his team will be successful for the upcoming season. In his introductory press conference, Coach Elko said that “It is my job to provide you with my vision for us to be successful.” Coach Elko has a vision and uses one of the qualities of leadership we learned in the class. Another quote that I enjoyed from coach Elko is when he talks about taking Texas A&M football to level and new heights. He says that “he takes a lot of responsibility and a lot of pride in doing that.” Another thing and the most important thing that resonated with me about Coach Elko is when he said “we are going to build the premier football team in the country. We are going to chase excellence and there is no shortcut to success.” In essence, Coach Elko is a leader I chose because in the last couple of months there was no other person who I have been listening more than Coach Elko. He is a tremendous coach, man, husband, and friend. He is everything that a leader should embody.

  • Noah Ruiz

Howdy, I’m Noah Ruiz and the sports leader I researched is Roger Staubach, Dallas Cowboys quarterback. I have the utmost respect for him, since in my opinion, he embodies the American spirit. He reflects his leadership qualities by example, on and off the field through his life. He is and always has been an entrepreneurial man, with his own restaurant and hotel in the Dallas area. Not only was he known as Captain America for his role as QB of “America’s Team”, but he also bravely served his country following his Heisman-winning college football career. Staubach put his country first over football, despite his talent, and made it known that he was a leader above everything. He represented himself as a family man and loyal husband when being compared to playboy Joe Namath, and set a good example for football fans everywhere. Being quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys has long been regarded as one of the toughest and challenging assignments in sports history, and Roger Staubach built that standard through his actions as a player and a man.

Howdy, y’all! My name is Baylee Ward, and I believe Patrick Mouratoglou is arguably one of the greatest leaders of all time.

Mouratoglou is widely recognized for his success with Serena Williams during her “comeback era” in 2012. Although Serena acquired thirteen grand slam titles prior to her journey with Patrick Mouratoglou, his elite leadership skills and remarkable coaching strategies enabled Serena to achieve gold, yet again, after experiencing one of the weakest points of her career.

I chose to link this video, in particular, because I think it effectively embodies Patrick Mouratoglou’s undeniable charisma while highlighting the significance of mental performance. Throughout the initial phases of Moratongoul’s work with Serena Williams, Serena was at the weakest/most vulnerable point of her career. As a result, Moratongoul developed a meticulous game plan that accommodated Serena's mental instability. He crafted individualized practice drills and game time strategies that capitalized on her strengths, ultimately providing Serena with room for error. His incredibly strategic and individualized coaching strategy sets him apart from other leaders within the industry. I admire his meticulous appeal to leadership and coaching. Moratongoul’s consistent adaptability, resilience, and hope sets him apart from other leaders in the industry. Additionally, his transparency and personable character is simply unparalleled. Within the realm of individual sport, I think Patrick Mouratoglou is one of the most effective leaders of all time.

  • Martin Alvarez

Howdy, my name is Martin Alvarez and the leader I chose is the late Mike Leach aka "The Pirate." He began his career as an offensive coordinator in the SEC and worked his way to Head Coach at many schools, implementing his patented Air Raid offense. Coach Leach was a good leader for many reasons, but most importantly he was authentic. Leach always tried to put himself in the shoes of others to better understand what they have gone through. He also enjoyed teaching and even taught a leadership course at Washington St. "Play the next Play" was one thing he repeated and can be applied off the field. Clearing your mind and refocusing on the task at hand is a valuable lesson for everyday life. His quirky personality and offensive genius made up only a portion of his success. It was his ability to instill his values into his team while focusing on the important things. Rest in peace coach.

  • Sarah Boriskie

Hello! My name is Sarah Boriskie and the leader I chose to talk about is Simone Biles. Simone Biles is an incredible athlete and leader, and I feel that anyone who has watched her journey throughout the years can attest to that. To me, Simone Biles is a leader in so many ways, but you can really see this through her dedication to gymnastics but also the way she carries herself and interacts with those around her. Watching her compete in the Olympics and seeing how she works with her team, constantly picks them up and helps them out is incredible and I think this is just a small glimpse into the kind of leader she is. She has used her platform to inspire others and share her journey with young gymnasts which can be really helpful to young athletes. She is a resource and an inspiration to so many girls around the world because she is transparent in her struggles and is able to help so many people through that. She has overcome a lot of things in her career but her dedication and commitment to the sport is so evident and to me, that is a great quality to have as a leader. This video dives into each of these reasons and continues to talk about all of the qualities Simone embodies and how she continues to be a leader in everything she does. Her hard work, dedication, commitment and courage is admirable and I believe that she can truly be an inspiration to everyone.

  • Jose Diaz

Howdy, my name is Jose Diaz and the leader that I chose to talk about is Inky Johnson. Inky Johnson is a former football player who played at the University of Tennessee and was projected to be a 1st round draft pick in 2006 but suffered a life-threatening injury. He went from dreaming of playing in the NFL, something he worked his whole life for, to all of it being taken away and having to pivot in life. Inky Johnson decided to use his story to inspire people and became a motivational speaker. He uses his platform to help people understand to not take life for granted because everything can change in an instant. With every interaction, he keeps inspiring others to overcome obstacles and tenaciously pursue achievement. In my opinion, using your platform and sharing your life story to help inspire others embodies what a true leader is. His story is one I definitely recommend looking into to not only to learn leadership but to gain motivation.

  • Salomon Cisneros

Howdy, my name is Salomon Cisneros and the leader I chose to talk about is Matthew McConaughey. Matthew McConaughey is a person I have a lot of respect for because he is a man who stands strong on his core values and beliefs. No matter how famous he got he stayed strong on his faith and his relationship with his loved ones. In this video he says to "decrease your options and you would have accidentally put in front of you what is most important to you." In this world it is easy to be distracted by exterior factors like going out to bars or hanging out with people who don't bring out the best in you. But once you dial in and focus on your goals and what's important to you, the possibilities are endless. He also talks about how your identity is important to you, and the impact you have others. He says to "eliminate who you are not first, and your gonna find yourself where you need to be."

  • Rex Gardiner

Howdy, my name is Rex Gardiner. I chose Lebron James as my motivational sports leader because I admire and look up to Lebron more than any other athlete or celebrity. In the video clip, LeBron talks about how he is obsessed with the “win or bust” pressure that the world puts on him. He says that by not allowing yourself to plan for failure, you are more motivated to succeed because it is a win or bust. Lebron is an effective leader because he genuinely cares about those around him, he wants his teammates to succeed, he wants his teammates to be as passionate about the game as he is, and takes it personally if they are not. Another reason for choosing Lebron is because he leads by example. He grew up without a father, so he has made it a point to be a great father to his children and a great husband to his wife. Lebron has contributed so much to his community as well, in his hometown of Akron, he has started the James Family Foundation to provide over 1400 low-income children with the support and programs they need to succeed in and out of school. Lebron stays humble, even with all his success, LeBron does not showboat on TV, or drive around in crazy cars like the typical celebrity, even after breaking the all-time scoring record he says “I never imagined I would be here, I prayed and worked my tail off for my success, but it hasn’t sunk in just yet. I never thought his (Kareem’s) record would be touched.” Finally, I admire Lebron because he lifts those around him, just like with the James family foundation, his sports agent Rich Paul was just Lebron's friend turned personal assistant, but as LeBron’s success has grown, he has enabled those close to him like Rich Paul to grow with him.

  • Jacob Villanueva

I am Jacob Villanueva, and the speech I have chosen from an effective leader is Nick Saban speaking about the Henry Ruggs incident that happened a few years ago. Saban is generally considered to be one of the best, if not the best, college football coaches of all time, and this is reflected in how others speak of him. The main reason for choosing this speech and this leader is twofold: it features a respected leader commenting on how others can be effective leaders in their own lives. The ability to assess how others should act and make motivational comments to inspire them is what led me to choose this speech. I chose Saban specifically because he has a proven track record in performance, as he has consistently won throughout most years of his tenure. He also has the backing of multiple former players, who agree with the assessment of him as a great leader. These factors compelled me to share and comment on this video, as Saban's insights offer valuable lessons on leadership. His words demonstrate how leaders can influence others by setting high standards and encouraging growth.

  • Alan Konecke

Howdy, my name is Alan Konecke, and the leader I chose to highlight was Michael Jordan. Jordan needs no drawn-out introduction, but some parts of his career that stand out to me as it relates to his leadership are that he faced a lot of adversity, from not making his varsity team in high school when he was a sophomore to his difficult early playoff runs, especially against the Pistons, to the passing of his father. Jordan faced much adversity throughout his career, but more often than not he let that adversity drive him. Part of that ability to take adversity and be driven by it was because of his passion and commitment to his craft, which I believe is part of what made Jordan a great leader. Talking about the clip, Jordan discusses one of the ways he leads. He made sure that everyone he played with was at the same level of commitment as he was. As he said he would challenge people who didn't want to be challenged, kept people to the same standard he kept himself to, and kept himself to the same demands that he required from others. While from the outside Jordan may not seem like a model leader, and the way he went about leading was not traditional, I still think that he was an incredible leader and motivator and was excellent at drawing the best out of his teammates. The main takeaways of Jordan's leadership are that he had a clear vision when he had his goal, which was more often than not winning, he had tunnel vision on that one goal; he also was an honest and authentic leader, he was going to be truthful with you whether you liked it or not as he wanted to get the best out of you, and he was not going to change himself to appear nice; and, as the video clip talked about, he led by example, he would not demand his teammates to do something he was not willing to do himself, and he would push his teammates to such high standards because he also kept himself to those standards. While Jordan had many other qualities that made him an effective leader, those were some that I look for in leadership, especially leading by example and being willing to hold yourself to the same standards you look for.

    Howdy!
Jordan Spieth shows motivational leadership through his remarkable blend of skill, resilience, and humility. His journey from a young, aspiring golfer to a three-time major champion highlights his dedication and hard work. Spieth’s ability to maintain composure under pressure, particularly during high-stakes tournaments, demonstrates his mental fortitude and commitment. He consistently exhibits sportsmanship and grace, setting a positive example for others in the competitive world of golf. Off the course, Spieth’s involvement in charitable work and his focus on giving back to the community further reflect his leadership qualities. His transparent approach to handling both victories and setbacks inspires others to embrace challenges with a positive attitude. Spieth’s perseverance and drive to continually improve encourage those around him to pursue their own goals with determination. Overall, his actions both on and off the course make Jordan Spieth a powerful source of motivation and a role model for aspiring athletes and leaders alike.

Howdy, My name is Tommy Ball and the person I chose was JJ Watt. He has always been great on the field but he is also great off the field. One of my favorite things that he did was when he still played for Houston and he raised just under $42 million for the recovery from Hurricane Harvey. The clip I chose was JJ Watt saying some motivating things which gets me excited. I like that he talks about that one of the many great things in America is that you can do whatever you want to do if you put your mind to it. Something that I like watching JJ do is helping out the community because he loves doing it, not because he has to. Another great thing that he does is helps middle schooler get the resources to be able to play football. JJ has a foundation and the goal of the foundation is to provide an opportunity for kids to be kids.

Mr. Johnson became a motivational speaker and went on a journey to speak with sports teams around the world. Inky is an effective leader because he uses his own experiences and charisma to to help make others better. • Theo Melin

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSyoEsrJ8-U Howdy,
The leader that I chose to talk about is the Swedish soccer player, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The reason why I chose him is because, growing up in Sweden playing soccer, he is someone I looked up to a lot. Zlatan has always been someone who's created his own path to success and whoever has gotten in his way has had to deal with him and his personality. He is known for his strong and confident personality and it's something that has gotten him a lot of fans, but also a lot of haters. In this video, Zlatan is getting a thank you ceremony for his accomplishments with the Swedish National Team. While giving his speech, he called upon the younger generation to dare to dream big. He also told them that if they are scared to dream big, to lean on his journey and draw strength from it and finished by saying he is living proof that no dream is too big no matter where you're from. I liked this speech because he knows that a lot of Swedish kids look up to him and the way he spoke to the younger generation was very motivating.

  • Isabella nieto

Howdy! My name is Isabella Nieto. I chose Derek Jeter not only because he is a legendary baseball player but because of how he gives back to communities in an inspiring way. Jeter spent his entire MLB career with the New York Yankees and was honored with induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2021. Selecting Jeter as a standout leader was an easy choice, though choosing just one video to showcase his impact was challenging given the many things he has done to show appreciation to different causes and communities. I decided to include two things that made me pick why I find him motivating.
The first thing that truly sets Derek Jeter apart from others is his Turn 2 Foundation. Founded by Jeter, this initiative focuses on empowering high school students, particularly future athletes. The foundation’s mission is to foster academic excellence, promote healthy lifestyles, and educate young people about the risks of alcohol and substance abuse. Through this work, Jeter serves as a role model, inspiring the next generation to reach their full potential.
Next, one of the biggest reasons I admire Derek Jeter so much is his dedication to showing support no matter where in the world it is. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California, where my mom has worked at Hoffmann Hospice for over 18 years. She currently serves as the Director of Operations and plays a crucial role in human resources and marketing for Hoffmann. Hoffmann Hospice is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing care, comfort, and quality of life for individuals nearing the end of their lives. Each year, Hoffmann Hospice hosts its major fundraiser, "Voices of Inspiration," which features a guest speaker who shares their story and accomplishments. This event is crucial for raising funds that support the hospice’s mission and help families in the Bakersfield area. Last year, Derek Jeter was the keynote speaker. His willingness to travel distances to support a cause like this speaks volumes about his character and commitment to giving back. It truly reflects the kind of person and leader he is.

  • Ryan Morrison

Howdy, the leader that I chose is Tom Brady. I chose Brady because he is the greatest of all time. Throughout his entire career he was known for being a great leader. His story is truly one of a kind. Being buried on the depth chart while at Michigan, to being the greatest of all time. He lead his teams to win 7 Super Bowls. He is known for his accolades, relentless mindset, and being a winner. In this speech Brady talks about the underdog mindset. He leads by example. He was never unprepared for a game in his entire career. From being up late watching film to being the first one in the door he did whatever it took to win. It is hard to summarize his greatness but one story told by a former teammate of his does a good job. While with Tampa Bay he had an empty locker next to his that his teammates would fill with items for him to autograph.

  • Cameron Tackett

Howdy! My name is Cameron Tackett, and the leader that I chose to talk about is Patrick Willis. Patrick Willis was the ultimate leader and motivator because of his relentless work ethic and deep passion for the game. He led by example both on and off the field, setting a high standard for his teammates with his commitment to the game. His ability to connect with others, rooted in his own experiences of overcoming a challenging childhood, allowed him to empathize with his teammates and inspire them to push them farther. Known for his intensity, Willis brought an infectious energy that motivated his team to always give their best. He combined this passion with a strong sense of accountability and humility, always putting the team first and accepting responsibility for his mistakes. Willis was both a vocal and a lead-by-example type of leader, often using his voice to rally teammates. His consistent excellence on the field, marked by seven Pro Bowl appearances and five First-Team All-Pro selections, earned him the trust and respect of his peers. His leadership style was adaptable, knowing when to be demanding and when to show compassion, fitting the needs of the moment and the individual. Ultimately, Patrick Willis was a truly exceptional leader in the NFL.

  • Mason Muchaw

Howdy, my name is Mason Muchaw. The leader I chose is Tom Brady, he shows the true definition of what a leader should be. Tom Brady kind of has an underdog story, he was picked late in the draft and wasn't expected to do much in his career. Now he is known as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. He shows the world that with real hard work and dedication anything is possible. I really like how he displays his leadership with his actions, he shows what it means to lead by example. He proves day in and day out that whatever work needs to be done he is going to be at the front of line doing it with his teammates. He sets a great example with all of the extra work he puts into his game and never falls short of doing the extra rep. Overall, Tom Brady inspires me and his fans to work hard to achieve our goals while also leading by example.

I am Drew Phillips, and the speech I chose for the effective leader is Nick Saban's speech on the methods he used to run one of the most successful organizations in history. Saban is typically viewed as one of the better coaches in college football and you can tell that people respect and value his efforts and opinions as a coach and leader. The reason I chose this speech and this leader is because it shows a highly valued and cherished leader speaks and motivates his team and how he formed such a strong and powerful roster mentally and physically, but also how he affected the people he leads as a whole. Saban isn’t only a respectable leader but his record is proof of his hard work and reliability. He also has many previous players and fellow coaches to vouch for him and his successes, he states that there are thing you need to do in order to achieve the success and it tends to be hard when things are going well, but that was how he stayed on the top of college football, by managing his team and continuing to grow rather than platowing. He talks about the required standards in order to keep good team chemistry and togetherness, and a team won’t be successful if they don’t do it. His dedication and consistency throughout his time at alabama is what makes him such a strong leader, his willingness to do the hard work and remain present through struggle and success is why i chose him as my leader.
