I’ve chosen for the speech that Paul Pogba gave before France played their World Cup Final against Croatia. He stepped up, although he wasn’t the captain of the squad, and felt the need to motivate his team. In the speech many leadership characteristics come across such as; be passionate, be open, build togetherness. I really admire the fact that he felt the need to lead his team even though he’s not the ‘official’ captain. I recognize myself in that.

This interview between Maverick Carter and Erving Magic Johnson is awesome, Magic was and is still considered one of the best point guards in NBA history, not only being one of the taller point guards to play the game, but amazing court vision and ball handling. However even when he first started playing in the league he realized that sports only can take people so far, there is so much more life after, and for some they are able to play sports longer than others. Not everyone is a professional athlete and need another source of income. Many pro athletes also go broke shortly after leaving the sports world. He took full advantage of being a minority and taking advantage of the market. Magic is a wealth of knowledge, he has a great mind for business and it shows with his success of the Dodgers making the past two world series and now recruiting one of the best to do it to play for his Lakers.

I’ve chosen the video ‘The Mind of Kobe Bryant- Life Advice’ because I’m a really big fan of the way he plays the game of basketball. I’ve always thought that he was the greatest player of all-time because of his drive, detail to the game, his fundamentals, and techniques in order to play at such a high level as he did night in and night out. It was about two years ago that I started to see how much of a motivator and leader he actually was. I knew he was a leader and floor general when he played on the court but off the court wow, he opened my eyes to be the best I can be and not to be scared of failure. He possesses phenomenal qualities that I strive and try to do daily such as striving for improvement, leading by example, self-conviction, resilience and the way he prepared for everything.

I’ve chosen the video ‘The Mind of Kobe Bryant-Learning’. I picked this video not only because Kobe Bryant is my favorite basketball player of all time but because I admire his thinking process, and his work ethic. He always had this thirst to be the greatest but also to have an understanding of the game he loved and how to apply that to his every day life. He never was satisfied with anything and he always saw room for improvement. If there were ever times he didn’t understand something he’d always ask. He studied not only his own game film but film of other players, past and present. He wanted to learn, to learn from other players, coaches, business owners etc. To me that’s what made him different from every one else, from the lowest points to his basketball career to the highest of points he looked for way to be better, to learn from his mistakes. Although the outside world saw him as the best player who knew everything there is to know about the game inside and out he didn’t, he still found new things to learn and that only grew his passion and love for his career. He is the perfect example of no matter how great you are in your profession you can always learn from others and learn something new.

I decided to use Dak Prescott, Quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, as an example of leadership. In the video, Dak explains that leadership is more than just working with a team, but working with a family. In order to gain full trust and respect from your teammates you must get to know them and build a relationship with them. I agree with his definition of leadership. Building that type of bond builds trust amongst your team which is key to success. In order to have others follow and trust you, you need to gain that trust first.

I have chosen Oprah Winfrey as someone who I look up to as a leader. Oprah Winfrey has taken on various roles such as a philanthropist, tv show and podcast host, producer, and actress. One of her greatest accomplishments that showcases her leadership abilities is creating The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. This school gives girls in South Africa an opportunity to receive an education and build their own leadership skills. By opening this school Oprah shows her passion for educating young women. By obtaining an education these girls are given opportunities to pursue their dreams.

I chose Lebron James as a great leader that I and many others look up to. Lebron James, a forward for the Lakers, is not only a leader on the court, but an international role model. He started a foundation that provides education for children and teenagers, as well as helps give them opportunity for future education. Those kids look up to him and his actions reflect his leadership and character qualities. He is a humble athletic star, who prioritizes his family and giving back to the community. He is knowledgeable of the game of basketball and is able to translate that knowledge in to leadership on the court. https://youtu.be/URbrID2l1_k

In seeing this video it hit me from multiple aspects of my life. This video is all about fighting your fight and when you fail its about what you do about the failure to grow from it. In life you aren’t going to be handed anything so it becomes about how you figure out what you want your legacy to be. It’s not about the dates on the grave stone its all about what happened in between those dates that build your legacy. Another point of view other than life in general, I looked at my softball life where in my sport it is all about failure and being 3/10 is a good thing. The video says it perfect in the beginning with the Wright brother when they said nobody knows how many times their flights failed because they did succeed and changed the world forever. This video puts together many life aspects and what really stuck with me was it doesn’t matter what you did yesterday its what you are going to do tomorrow or today.

This video will always be my favorite inspirational/motivational speech ever. This video exemplifies what it takes to be a leader and to never give up. Life will always throw curve balls at you, but how will you respond? This video has taught me to battle through adversity and to continue to thrive academically, and physically. Failure is one of the best lessons to learn from. Defeat has taught me to work harder and shows what I could have done better. It shows what I can change, so I can grow as an individual. Defeat also shows me what to focus on in the near future. “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.” (Thomas, 2011) This well known quote will always stick with me throughout life.

Cristiano Ronaldo is arguable the best soccer player in the world. However, all his fame and fortune was all possible only at a certain cost. When he was only twelve years old he had to leave his family behind in order to pursue his career as a professional athlete. Now, he hold many records and collects trophies like pocket change. He is the captain of the Portugal national soccer team and on any club team that he plays for he is the leader of the attack. His methods may not always be the most satisfying to the public but as a leader he does what needs to be done in order for his team to succeed.

Ray Lewis exemplifies what a true, hard working leader looks like. The 2 time Super Bowl Champion, MVP of Super Bowl XXXV and inductee of The National Football League (NFL) Hall of Fame is nothing short of a legend. At a young age he was criticized for being too small to play linebacker at the University of Miami. After being drafted to the NFL, he was accused of murder at a night club in which he spent 15 days in jail for. In the video I posted he talks about one of his final seasons in the NFL and fighting back through “pain” in order to go out on a note that he wanted. Despite all of the adversity he has had in his life, he always found a way to electrify his teammates and those around him. He has fought through the “pain” and will be remembered as one the best linebackers to ever play the game. He now goes around the country motivating others to obtain their greatness, just as he did. He is using his platform for something bigger than himself, a unteachable characteristic of a great leader.

If anyone I had to choose that displays the 10 themes we discussed in class, it has to be “Big 3″ of the San Antonio Spurs. For those who don’t know the “Big 3″ it was Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker. Throughout the years 1999-2016, the Big 3 were a dominant force in the NBA making the playoffs every single season without skipping a beat, thus resulting in 5 championships. Now what made them be successful throughout those years? The answer is having those 10 themes: Leadership, Being themself, Being Committed, Be Open, Being a Communicator, Being a Teacher, Be Passionate, Build Togetherness Being Decisive and Build Trust. Those 3 managed to resemble those traits as not only within themselves, but with players, coaches and the front office of the spurs organization. They might have not been a flashy team, but they did create a culture of selflessness, on the court, notably their tremendous ball movement and high basketball IQ.

I can say with 100% confidence that there is not a single individual person I have met, or will ever meet, that is a better leader, or person for that matter than my grandfather, Raymond G. Murphy. He was a captain in the Marines Corp in 1953 during the Korean War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest honor awarded in the military. The video clip attached gives an explanation of why he was awarded the Medal of Honor. It shows how selfless he was and that is what a good leader is. He does not care of the achievement of themselves, but for the well being and success of others. He continued to be selfless well being his years he served. My dad often tells stories of strangers coming up to him in public and venting to him. My grandfather would stay and talk to them for sometimes an hour or more just to try to help them through whatever it is they may have been going through. When he retired, he continued to volunteer at the VA hospital in Albuquerque, helping other vets. He would go to the hospital everyday and help take patients to their appointments, help at the front desk, or just sit and talk with them about anything and everything. He genuinely cared about his family, friends, and even complete strangers than himself. I can not think of anything more anyone could ask of a leader…

I chose Carles Puyol as the leader I wanted to show you. Puyol is from Spain and played at Barcelona, he was the captain of both the Barcelona squad and the Spain National team. In this video it shows him being a leader on the field and why everybody gives him so much respect now. He was a leader with his actions, his vocal skills, his attitude, and his competitiveness really. He led Barcelona one season to win every trophy possible, then he led the National team to a World Cup title. One of my favorite defenders definitely. Now Puyol acts as an ambassador for Barcelona and travels all over to open up more soccer communities for young children. Overall he is a player to look up too as well as a person. Perfect Captain!

I chose MJ for my example of a peak performer, and great leader. MJ was a 2 time college player of the year. While in the rest of his career he managed to get 6 NBA Finals MVP Awards, 10 Scoring titles, 5 MVP awards, 10 ALL-NBA First Team Designations, 9 All-Defensive First Team Honors, 14 NBA All-Star Game Selections, 6 time NBA Champion with the bulls and more. Bottom line is MJ might not have been the best leader early in his career but he progressed as a person and player, which helped him become a great leader over time.

I chose Kobe Bryant as an elite leader for various reasons. Early on in his career, Kobe was a very selfish player, wanting to win on his own skill and nothing else alone. He arguably did. In the year he won his MVP title: 2008, it was the year that humbled him. It was the first time he made it to an NBA finals without Shaq and he was ready to prove himself. He then proceeded to get blown out in the 2008, relying on his skill alone, not truly trusting others. He realized then that he had to go back to the drawing board, he had to trust others, It takes a real leader to realize that they need to change their ways. Kobe was one of them. He still held teammates accountable but he was still will to trust them. Making him a truly great leader

A real leader is someone who never backs down, puts others up, and keeps moving forward. Marcus Luttrell is a great example of this. He managed to get through BUDS, Hell Week, and served in the military from ’99 to ’07. Mr. Luttrell was the “Lone Survivor” after Operation Red Wing. He did everything in his power to keep his brothers moving and when he realized he was the only one, he never stopped moving forward. When he couldn’t run anymore, he walked, and when he couldn’t walk anymore, he crawled. The man shows every feature of a leader and that is why he is a great one.

I choose Coach Bobby Bowden as my leader because of what he embodies as not only a coach but a friend. Faith, Family and Football. Those are words that go hand in hand with Coach Bowden. To this day he still has not been afraid to profess his Faith and how it’s the foundation to his success. He has always said Family is next and demonstrated that throughout his career. He would teach that to his fellow co-workers, as well as players. Then there’s football. Most people know Coach for the success he had on the gridiron but many don’t know the humble beginnings of Coach taking over a losing program and forging them into a dynasty. Throughout the decades he coached he always stuck to that formula of Faith, Family and Football and it affected several lives positively all while doing his passion.

I chose Inky Johnson as many of you guys all know he always does very inspirational videos. And after have hearing his story and learning more about his background and just getting to know him as a person I am now well aware of the leadership role he took on early in life the sacrifices he had to make. Everything he did was to not only better himself but his to put his family in a better situation as well and I feel as though we are almost one in the same when it comes to that nature. He bought into becoming a leader and he was committed to the sport he loved which is Football and just like me he found a way out of what many may call the slums just as I did he was so he’s v very passionate about the game there wasn’t anything that could take him away from football and that’s exactly how I am. I chose Inky Johnson not only because I loved the way he plays or we share a similar sport it was because the story that he has everyone has a story about how they got to where they are today and his is probably one of the most inspirational this guy went from playing Division I football up until it was time to play in the NFL he had lost his arm shortly after a tragic incident after a game but fortunately that level of adversity still never tarnished his goals or got in the way of anything he wanted to accomplish now he speaks all over the country going from school to school to tell his story and help inspire people.

I chose Tim Tebow’s “Promise” speech after Florida Gators lost to Ole Miss by 1 point. This speech shows his committment to the school, to the game and to the fans to do the best that he can and hold himself accountable for the way things played out. He showed his passion and emotions that lead the whole team that far. He cares about his team and had the confidence to build trust with everyone after the lost and promise that they will continue to play to their best ablity for the rest of the season. He accepted defeat and bulit on it to keep moving foward knowing that something great can come out of all situations. After this season him and his team went on to win the BCS National Championship agaisnt ranked #1 Oklahama proving what a true leadership mindset can do.

I chose Peyton Manning to present as a peak performer. There are many people who say that Manning is one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. The reason I chose Manning was because he displays the themes of leadership. He builds togetherness and trust by creating a fun and welcoming environment for his teammates and coaches. He is open and is a great communicator with the people he works with. Along with many of the other themes of leadership that Manning exhibited daily on and off the field, I also feel like he is just all around a good person. I found a video in which he hand wrote letters to a couple of retired players and coaches thanking them for how they played and respected their profession in the NFL. The video I am sharing is a clip of a former teammate of Manning acknowledging the difference in their team’s performance and success without Manning’s leadership. https://youtu.be/9C1J3SgZJ-g

I choose MLK because he changed society as a leader. Martin Luther King went against the crowds and odds that people of color would be treated the same despite the color of their skin. He inspires many to go out of your comfort zone to succeed the dreams you are trying to reach. I feel like getting out of your comfort zone pushes you to boundaries you would have never have thought of reaching just as he did. He is an iconic leader who we still talk about today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I47Y6VHc3Ms

I chose this video with Jocko Willink, who is a former Navy Seal, to get that ultimate point of view of a leader. The message through his words are powerful and in depth due to the fact that he ties in normal events into our everyday life and how we face battles on a consistent basis. Leadership is a choice that everyone has an opportunity for. Jocko explains why you need to be ready to lead all the time. Always having the leadership mentality will allow you to be ready in any leadership situations that come your way. Have a leadership perspective in everything you do and it will become a part of you.

I chose Lionel Messi as I am a former soccer player, but also because Messi to me is a real inspiration. Growing up and playing soccer and watching the greats like Henry, Zidane, and so many others I began to want to be like them and play at a pro level. Growing up, the only problem I had was my size. Seeing all these pro athletes compete against one another was so exciting, but they were also much much larger. Knowing I was still a kid I was not too worried about the my size issue, but there came a point when I had almost finished growing and I was still playing and I still wasn’t big enough in my mind. Then I had heard of this young player from Argentina named Messi, who was one of the youngest players and was also one of the smallest players. Today Messi is thought of as possibly the best soccer player to have ever lived. He has done so many incredible things in the game despite his size, and he is a humble man on top of it all, but confident in his abilities.

  • Andrew McAuley

I chose Kobe Bryant for my leadership example. Kobe is by far my favorite basketball player of all time, and also one of my favorite leaders. I just love Kobe’s demeanor of setting out to dominate an opponent by both out working and out hustling them. Kobe’s leadership style is dynamic. Similar to Michael Jordan, Kobe strived to make his teammates better by any means possible. Kobe wasn’t afraid of confrontation with his teammates or even his coaches. Although Kobe soon realized in his career that everyone is not motivated the same way, so he switched up his leadership methods a little. I think that a good leadership quality is being open and willing to change when something is not working, and Kobe is good at being able to adapt to different situations. Finally, the meaning of Kobe famous adage ‘Mamba Mentality’ is a perfect example of what Kobe embodies as both a leader, basketball player, and a person. ‘Mamba Mentality’ is described by Kobe as “a way to live with just trying to get better everyday at whatever you’re doing.”

Serena Williams is a great example of a peak
performer. I believe this because a peak performer has many components to them. She meets every one of them. From winning 23 ground breaking titles to creating charity organizations for education, gender equality and hunger just to name a few. She inspirational to me because she shows determination, commitment, and at the same time be humble. In the video listed it shows how hard she worked to get where she’s at and the struggles that occurred along the way. But she also mentions that everyone has struggles to get where they want and the most important thing to do is self belief.

I chose Michael Jordan for my pick for a great leader. In this video it shows that he first led his team by example. As the video progresses Michael becomes more vocal giving his team encouraging words to help them perform better. This video also interviewed some of his teammates and how they looked at him. Overall I believe Michael Jordan was a great leader for his team.
